Thema:
How can students and faculty truly learn from each other? And what happens when both groups come together to shape education side by side? This interactive workshop invites students and faculty members to explore the power of co-creation in Health Professions Education (HPE).
Doel:
The workshop aims to foster mutual understanding and empathy between students and faculty by creating space for honest dialogue and reflection. It highlights the value and complexity of co-creation in education, drawing on Arnstein’s (1969) Ladder of Participation to explore the difference between tokenism and genuine partnership. Participants will critically reflect on where their current practices fall on this ladder and what it takes to move toward more meaningful involvement. The session ultimately seeks to inspire participants to identify opportunities for shared ownership in curriculum development and promote a cultural shift toward authentic collaboration in HPE.
Doelgroep:
This session is designed for both students and faculty members in Health Professions Education who are interested in making education more inclusive, participatory, and responsive. A mixed group is essential, as the dialogue between roles lies at the heart of the workshop.
Opzet: activiteiten en opbrengst:
The workshop begins by creating a safe and open space where participants can share their personal goals and expectations. Early reflections focus on the idea that students and faculty often aim for the same outcomes but rarely have the opportunity to fully understand each other’s perspectives.
Participants will begin in peer groups—students with students, faculty with faculty—to discuss how student voices are currently included in curriculum and teaching. These insights are then shared in mixed groups, where responses from the “other side” uncover tensions, opportunities, and points of alignment.
The group will explore real-world examples of co-creation in HPE, with Arnstein’s Ladder of Participation used as a framework to discuss the depth of student involvement. Emotional, cultural, and institutional barriers will also be addressed.
In the final phase, groups move from reflection to action: What can be done tomorrow to advance co-creation? Participants will co-develop concrete steps and reflect on what an “ideal symbiosis” between students and faculty could look like.
The session ends with a take-home question:
How can we promote a culture of true co-creation in medical education?
