Thema:
Planetary Health (PH) is a solutions-oriented, transdisciplinary field and social movement focused on analysing and addressing the impacts of humandisruptions to Earth’s natural systems on human health and all life on Earth. PH addresses complex and intersectional challenges, requiring complementary collaboration across disciplines and nations.
PH is a relatively new topic in Health Professions. Education, and educationalists are in search of an approach to implement courses. Students are important stakeholders in this search; as learners that will inherit the future world.
We recently implemented an online course on PH, connecting students across different faculties and countries within an existing University network, ENLIGHT. Students played a key role in development of this course that is characterized by a focus on intersectionality and interdisciplinarity. Building on this experience, this workshop engages in an interactive exploration using a Design Thinking approach to explore student engagement, intersectionality and interdisciplinarity in educational development and design. Design Thinking is a creative, solution-oriented methodology that guides participants step-by-step in developing innovative solutions to complex issues. In groups, participants go through the design thinking process (empathize, define, ideate, prototype, test) unpacking three important challenges to Planetary Health Education (PHE):
1. Student engagement – How do you give students a structural and active role in design and execution?
2. Intersectionality – How do you integrate social, economic, political, and medical inequalities in a thoughtful way into a curriculum?
3. Interdisciplinarity – How do you effectively align programs within and beyond healthcare?
Doel:
At the end of the workshop, participants will have:
1. Insight into PH as a topic, including the concepts intersectionality and interdisciplinarity
2. Hands-on experience with Design Thinking and understanding of how design thinking can be used in educational development.
3. A practical conceptualization of PHE activity with a practical, testable to take home.
4. Insights into the different aspects of PHE implementation. Specifically:
• Student engagement
• Integrating intersectionality
• Aligning interdisciplinarity
Doelgroep:
Teachers, curriculum developers, education coordinators,
healthcare workers (doctors, nurses, allied health
professionals, veterinarians, etc.), staff in (bio)medical,
health sciences, social and environmental education, and
students
Opzet: activiteiten en opbrengst:
Brief introduction to the concept of Planetary Health and an international PH-course: Collaborating in Planetary Health. Gain experience with a structured co-creation process. Concrete application of design thinking to real-world challenges. Insight into usability and feasibility of their own created concept. Tools to further implement the idea in their own educational or policy context. Networking and inspiration by sharing experiences with other groups.
