Thema:

Addressing challenges in your research or supervision journey through discussions with fellow researchers and supervisors.

Doel:

Equip researchers and supervisors with strategies to manage challenging situations, fostering a mutual understanding of both perspectives: what it is like to be a new researcher and what it is like to be a supervisor. How would you respond if you were in the other position?

Doelgroep:

Master’s students, junior researchers, PhD candidates, postdocs, senior researchers (with supervisory roles), and other supervisors.

Opzet: activiteiten en opbrengst:

In this workshop, we will use forum theatre to address challenges in your research and supervision. First, the workshop leaders will briefly explain the workshop’s purpose and then give a short introduction to ‘forum theatre’. The workshop facilitators will serve as actors and enact various challenging scenarios, allowing participants to shape how each scenario unfolds. Participants will have the power to direct each scenario and determine together how a researcher or supervisor might respond in these difficult situations.

Following this, the group will split into smaller groups, ideally containing at least one supervisor. The workshop leaders will facilitate the subgroups. Each subgroup can select from six scenarios, with the option to introduce their own scenario. In these subgroups, participants will use the same forum theatre format: one person assumes the role of a young researcher (ideally a supervisor), and another takes on the role of a supervisor (preferably a PhD candidate, researcher, or master’s student). The remaining participants observe and may interject to offer alternative perspectives. The scenario resumes with a new approach or a new participant. There will be a short reflection when the participants finish the scenario. Each subgroup gets the opportunity to enact and evaluate at least one or more scenarios in 45 minutes.

The workshop leaders will collectively close the workshop, during which participants will compile take-home messages and share insights gained from enacting the scenarios.
