Thema:
Online education has many advantages, such as improved effectiveness, comfort, and student performance. However, it comes with its disadvantages as well. A disadvantage that is often reported in the literature is the lack of high-quality online interaction between students and students, and between students and teachers [1]. We have previously conducted a scoping review, in which we have uncovered definitions, measurements, and interventions that are recommended to improve quality of online interaction [2]. In addition to our scoping review, we have conducted a focus group study to learn more about how (bio)medical students and teachers perceive online interaction, and how they would like to see it improve. Finally, we have developed a “teach the teacher” training to improve quality of interaction in an online Master program.
Doel:
The goal of the workshop is to help participants design, implement, and evaluate an intervention to improve quality of online interaction.
Doelgroep:
Our target audience consists of teachers and course designers who are involved in any form of online education, as well as researchers interested in online interaction. The workshop will take place in English.
Opzet: activiteiten en opbrengst:
We will start the workshop with a short introduction of our research on online interaction. We will describe the online interaction interventions that we have uncovered in our studies. Furthermore, we will discuss our own experience with designing, implementing, and evaluating an intervention to improve quality of online interaction in an online course. We will share pitfalls, challenges, and solutions.
Next, participants will work in small groups to design an intervention to improve online interaction. For this purpose, each group will be provided with a real online-teaching case, which describes an online course (asynchronous or synchronous), together with problems that arise in regards to online interaction. If the participants themselves teach an online course in which they identify online interaction issues, they are encouraged to use that course as a case to design interventions for instead of the provided case. Facilitators will provide support in selecting and developing an intervention. No preparation prior to the workshop is required.
Following the group work, each group will be asked to share their insight and ideas. Finally, we will end the workshop with suggestions on how such an intervention can be evaluated.
